Week 1.1

Introductions

This is my design internship log book where I will be documenting my experiences at my internship with StarMaster Space Education. With my own background working as a visual designer at educational and editorial companies, plus career aspirations in UX and UI, this opportunity was a really great fit. I'm very excited to get started!

I began my first week with an initial meeting with Sagarika, who is the primary supervisor of the interns, and the research and content lead for StarMaster. We established our roles and the first major tasks for the next coming weeks. Every week, I will be meeting with Sagarika to discuss progress and other opportunities of the internship.

My first task

At the moment, the educational content has all been written, but the visual content needs refining. My first task is to help design visual assets that are being used in the educational resources of the program. This week, I started this task by reviewing all of the modules to see what needs to be recreated. I also spent some time browsing the Starmaster website (which is also a work in progress) to familiarise myself with the style, branding, and patterns that make up the identity of the company. I spent some time taking these notes to use them as a guide for when I would begin designing the assets.

The first image I am working to redesign is a timeline of the Space Race from 1957 to 1969:

Some things I am already thinking about changing in the redesign:

  • Organising the timeline to be more spread out and organised to improve readability

  • Colours that are less fluorescent and follow the established palette of the brand

  • Fonts

  • Background could be more realistic (starry background)

I've already started experimenting with these elements in Adobe Illustrator.

Sagarika and I also spoke about the chance to meet other people of the team, like the writers of the educational content, and the CEO, Bruce, who I met in the interview for this internship. Being a predominantly remote company, the team is made up of a diverse set of members with different backgrounds and skills. I hope to connect with many of team members because I think it would be a great opportunity to learn from people with different roles and experiences. I find that being mostly remote is great for flexibility too.

Overall, I'm feeling really keen to get into this first task and also meeting the rest of the team!
